Notorious recluse Charlize Theron, a woman known mostly for her reticence to express an opinion, breaks her legendary silence during one of her rare press junkets on the subject of The Hills, declaring it to be “about nothing.”

It’s funny because I think we can all agree that on the one hand, she does have a point. The Hills‘ lack of meaningful substance and obsession with the day-to-day minutiae of a airbrushed gang of otherwise functionless young women can easily lead one to question how such a vacuous expenditure of what could be valuable, productive time has become such a global phenomenon. And then on the other hand it’s like shut up, Charlize Theron.

Really? No, I don’t think so.

Charlize is cool and the Hills is beyond so bad it’s funny. It’s wretched. Anyone who pretends to watch it from an ironic distance should admit they like looking at pretty people and watching a show which uses minimal brain-power to digest.

  2. I’ve tried to watch The Hills and just can’t. It makes me stabby. Though I think it would probably be a lot of fun to watch with Charlize and some beers.

  3. There’s a perception that people who don’t talk much will have something really weighty and interesting to say when they do open their mouths. Guess not always.

  4. I love Videogum but I’m still highly disturbed by the fact that you guys apparently watch and discuss The Hills.
