Movies that are based on plays are usually the worst, but this looks pretty good. Written and directed by John Patrick Shanley! Joe Versus the Volcano! That being said, they might have stretched out the tension a little bit so that it was a complex moral thriller. A movie in which you’re never quite sure if a priest engaged in sexual abuse or if it’s just a retaliatory act by a progress-resistant head nun would be interesting and taut. This shows its hand so quickly that we’re basically dealing with a two hour exercise in how big of a bitch Meryl Streep can become. Big!
