In this Nylon interview with Courtney Love, she shows us her home, which looks like a Hot Topic, and explains why the album she’s working on is her last: “I’m done with a show, and I want to die, or fuck, or eat, or kill.” In a refreshing contrast to stage mothers like Dina Lohan, Courtney says Frances Bean will have to “step over (her) dead body” if she wants to get in the music industry. Oh but then she says “She’ll probably act or direct or run Hollywood,” so nevermind. Courtney just doesn’t want the competition:

I mean, plenty of her image problems are completely her fault, but it’s indisputably true that some of them are rooted in sexism. The majority of coverage she recieves tends towards this obnoxious moralistic tone, ‘what a bad mother’, ‘what a mess, she’s pathetic’, etc, with an underlying tone of ‘she’s gross and skanky, ew’. She may be a shitty mother, and pathetic (and skanky), but that doesn’t mean that (to paraphrase Robert Christgau) the world isn’t out to deny her props – you don’t see music writers talking about bad-parenting asshole junkie male rock stars from John Lennon to Iggy Pop to Neil Young in this way (well, neil is a pretty cool father, but whatevs) – no, when they’re at their most strung out and egomaniacal and pathetic, it just shows the depth of their pain and suffering, and they get to be retrospectively lauded for the classic albums they made during those times (plastic ono band, tonights the night, and so on). It’s depressing that so many people can’t hear that despite the surrounding tawdriness, America’s Sweetheart (not perfect by any means) was a pretty strange and powerful album – she still has a pretty great voice, plays some loose and raw guitar, and isn’t afraid to embarrass herself (that’s good!). I mean, she’s certainly a more compelling musician that Iggy (the male counterpart to her archetype) has been since 1978, and there are a shitload of people who treat him like an ‘important artist’ (can’t fuck with the Stooges, though). Ok, this is way too long, but also – the common belief is that Kurt wrote most of Live through this, whereas all reports from people who knew them are that COurtney actually helped him with his music far more than vice versa. Ok, i’m done. Jesus, i cant believe the length of this. Night shifts suck.
Oh yeah, and how about that blog beef with Ryan Adams? thats some special shit.
