Newsweek invites us to meet The Nerd Girls: young women who study engineering but also wear a lot of makeup and have long hair. It seems The Nerd Girls have branded themselves in an attempt to get a reality TV show — answering emails every week from people around the country who need remote-controlled doggie doors or something. Forgive my skepticism, but both the article and the video contain far too much emphasis on girly stuff to signify a major cultural shift. I don’t think this would be Lisa-Simpson-approved.
Remember when Denise Richards played nuclear physicist Dr. Christmas Jones in The World Is Not Enough? This seems just like that.

This video is a total fail. I think we all know at least ten, way hotter, way smarter girls that can rise above a cheap “look how smart I am in my dress!” ploy.
Good thing they’re pretty, otherwise I wouldn’t care about them.
i think its FANTASTIC! i think some people are missing the point…it’s not just about being girly-pretty-cheerleader-tastic and overlooking the AWESOMENESS that’s behind it all (brains, passion, interest in what one likes to do) its about putting a positive spin on a negative connotation/stereotype and showing how its a GREAT thing to be smart, and how its great to like math and engineering, AND still be proud of who you are and your gender.
I do not think the Nerd Girls are selling a false image, and trying to create another “look at the barbie dolls that happen to like to study too” , I read their message as
one that screams “Hey we can be attractive in many different ways, but lemme show you what we’ve got that shines above and beyond societal beauty”
