Um…this? This thing I’m about to show you? So good. Opening night, son.

It’s a documentary about LARPers. LARPing stands for Live Action Role Playing. You just learned your one thing of the day to try and constantly grow and become a better person! You’re done! Congratulations. This thing, though, so good, it’s like, King of Kong meets a furries convention, crossed with that episode of This American Life about the kid who hates being in love. Nerds, you guys. They’re the best/worst.

  1. Well that just validated all SORTS of stereotypes.

  2. On a related note, everyone featured in this film is Lindsay’s boyfriend.

I liked this doc when it was called Darkon: http://youtube.com/watch?v=BJP4VALJP1c

  4. I got to catch “Monster Camp” at the Cucalorus Film Festival in Wilmington, NC, and I thought it was really funny. However, what I liked most about the film was that it didn’t make a mockery of its subjects, pointing and laughing at how ridiculous the whole idea of LARPing was.

Oh, and that kid from “This American Life” is going to be the next Bill Gates. Mark my words.

  5. I never saw Darkon, but I liked Monster Camp better.

Seriously though I saw Monster Camp at the standing room only Cucalorus screening too, although I don’t know how I should take the director’s claim that he wasn’t trying to mock his subjects since most of the audience was in fact pointing and laughing at how ridiculous LARPing is. Sure its a documentary, but I wonder how much more or less I would have been laughing AT the subject(s) of this film if it had been created by a longtime LARPer instead.

  6. i used to work with a guy who did this sort of thing hardcore- real metal weapons, real armor, concussions, contusions, broken bones, etc. the Paranoia larpers are my favorites.
