Today Variety reports that the 1985 cult classic Girls Just Want To Have Fun is being remade. This is huge news for fans of the often overlooked, actually quite witty dance movie (if Dorothy Parker wrote a teen dance movie in the ’80s, it would be GJWTHF), and hopefully the writer they hired, Michelle Morgan, will be smart enough to leave in lines like Helen Hunt’s immortal koan: “I just know I must be horny!” (Not to mention Jonathan Silverman’s classic boob-touching game “Tune In Tokyo!”) But which actors in today’s Young Hollywood are worthy of the movie’s seven most iconic roles? Here are some suggestions from someone totally uninformed about today’s teen actors. I mean, like, really really really uninformed. Do you know how few actually talented actors under the age of 25 there are out there? Like, three! Casting movies is really hard!

Hilarious Sidekick Lynne Stone (Originally Helen Hunt):

Love Interest/Dance Partner Jeff Malene (Orig. Lee Montgomery):

Mean Girl Natalie Sands (Orig. Holly Gagnier):

Jeff’s Goofy Best Friend, Drew Boreman (Orig. Jonathan Silverman):

Jeff’s Adorable Little Sister Maggie Malene (Orig. Shannen Doherty):

Extra: Guy Who’s Under The Table At The Coming Out Party (Orig. Robert Downey, Jr.):

And Goofy, Innocent New Girl In Town Who Just Wants To Dance, Janey Glenn (Orig. Sarah Jessica Parker): No Idea!:

Anne Hathaway would be perfect, but she’s too old! And don’t give me Miley Cyrus. We want this movie to be reasonably good. You know what would be GREAT? If they used covers of the same songs from the original movie, like, have MGMT do “Dancing In Heaven” or something. And Dance TV diva Ricki could be played by Britney Spears. I don’t know. Making movies is probably, like, really hard. I happen to have watched GJWTHF last weekend, though, and one thing is certain: Michael Cera is today’s Jonathan Silverman.

  1. Your choices show an extremely remedial understanding of today’s teen actors. At least you can admit you have a problem.

While I do love the original, maybe a remake could end up kind of fun? Or am I kidding myself?

  2. just throw in Blake L. as Sarah J. and call it “Gossip Girl presents: GJWTHF”. if it’s succesful, turn it into a franchise where those kids remake popular teen comedies: “GG presents: Footloose”, “GG presents:: Heathers”, “GG presents:: Clueless”, “”GG presents:: 10 Things I Hate About You”, “”GG presents:: High School Musical 3: Senior Year”…
    GREAT IDEA!

  3. Goddamnit, Hollywood really is out of ideas, isn’t it? Footloose, Fame, Flight of the Navigator, and now this. Am I wrong, or was so much of these movies’ joy was in their soundtrack, silly dancing, and slow motion flips? How do you recreate THOSE? How do you recreate Dance TV and towns with laws against music and Pee-Wee Herman as a robot from the future?

I miss the way we were.

  4. Cyrus for SJP. Not cause I want her to, but because chances are, she will. Fuck.

  5. Has there been a remake that is better, or even as good as the original? Off hand I can’t think of one, except perhaps the recent Batman films. I mean other than the potential for easy $$$ what is the basis for the thought that remakes are necessary? Have any movies actually been improved upon?

  6. They should just use the exact same cast.

No they should most definitely not get Miley Cyrus for the lead. But they should get SELENA GOMEZ!! Afterall, she is the next big thing.

“And Goofy, Innocent New Girl In Town Who Just Wants To Dance”

Obviously Taylor Swift. Her songs are pretty much exactly about being an innocent new girl in town who just wants to sing/dance with a quarterback in the rain.

  9. I like how optimistic this post is! You are such a girl just wanting to have fun (again)!!

  10. If Michael Cera is today’s Jonathan Silverman, then we should expect Weekend At Bernies 14 sometime soon.

  11. Miley Cyrus should play the mean girl with a creepy relationship with her father.
Please don’t remake it, I kind of loathe SJP but the kids don’t dance these days.
And I was just watching it on youtube. Next they’re going to remake Troop Beverly Hills.

you are so naive, janie. you think we’re going to win this thing? we’re not going to win? we’re only in this stupid contest to make it look fair. but it’s rigged. everything’s rigged.

  13. they should use the Starfucker cover of girls just wanna have fun

  14. Welcome to ever Friday night of my life at the age of seven.

I know Miley is a no go for the head role and I’d hate to hand it to a Disney star but if they must I wouldn’t totally mind Demi Lovato. Any one but Little J.

i think that SJP’s part should be played by Ashley Tisdale or Megan Park and Lynn should be Jenny from gossip girl cuz shes badass lookin OOO NO! AMBER TAMBLIN FROM SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS WOULD BE PERFECT! umm and the lead like zac or chase who will bring in the tweenyboppers

  17. Who should play the lovable/ whacky characters in the remake of “Girls Just Want To Have Fun”?

Janey was originally played by a teenage Sarah Jessica Parker. She was shy, quirky, beautiful, fun loving, and a great dancer.
My remake choice is: Amanda Bynes. I mean, just look at her in most of the TV shows and movies shes in. Yes, this is type casting her, but so what? She’d be great for the role.

Janey’s retired military Dad was originally played by Ed Lauter.
I think J.K. Simmons would be great as Janeys father.

Janey’s beautiful yet fragile & quiet mother was played by Margaret Howell.
I think that Kristen Davis would be a great actress for this role.

Janey’s new best friend Lynn Stone was played by the ever hilarious, goofy, yet pretty Helen Hunt.
I think Dakota Fanning would be great in the role as the young fashinista.

Janey’s beautiful sophisticated, spoiled, rich bitch arch enemy Natalie Sands was played by Holly Gagnier.
I think Michelle Trachtenberg would be fierce in this role.

Janey’s love interest & dance partner Jeff Malene was played by the gorgeous Lee Montgomery.
I believe Johnny Simmons would be great in this role because he looks so much like Lee Montgomery, he’s a funny actor, AND… he was born in a city called Montgomery. Come on, hes bron for the role!

Jeff’s 13 year old sister Maggie was played by the (then) sweet, innocent, & bubbly Shannen Doherty.
I am having a little trouble deciding who should play this role so I have chosen a few:
Saoirse Ronen, Elle Fanning, Chloe Moretz, or Abigail Breslin.

Jeff’s father was played by Biff Yeager.
My remake choice? Ricky Gervais. ’nuff said.

J.P. Sands was played by the grumpy and morose Morgan Woodard.
    My choice? Donald Sutherland

The star dancer of D-tv (Rikki) was played by Kristi Somers. She reminds me so much of Sharpay Evans, so…
my remake choice for her would be Ashley Tisdale.

Jeff’s Goofy Best Friend, Drew Boreman (Orig. Jonathan Silverman)
My remake choice? Michael Cera, Pauol Rust, Jesse Eisenberg, Anton Yelchin, or Joseph Gordon Levitt.
