We heard recently that Anderson Cooper and Matt Lauer we two of the people in the whispered running for the job of hosting Jeopardy! once Alex Trebek retires. One of America’s currently most disliked television personalities VS. one of America’s probably still most beloved television personalities, even though we’ve cooled on him a good amount since he had so many pointless features on his failed daytime TV show? How is anyone supposed to make that decision?! JUST GET SETH MEYERS TO DO IT! Today the rumor “news” has hit the Internet that these two national treasures, one less shiny and way less treasure-y than the other, for sure, have been pitted against each other YET AGAIN! From Deadline:

Here’s the latest wrinkle: I hear NBC toppers recently reached out to CNN’s Anderson Cooper to replace Lauer on the show before the end of the year. After their initial approach to Cooper, I hear NBC reached out to Lauer to get his blessing about the changeover. But I heard they got pushback from the Today veteran, who contacted Cooper to express his disapproval. I also hear that call caught Cooper by surprise, as he had assumed Lauer had been brought on board before NBC began making overtures. Cooper has been one of the leading faces at CNN, though I hear his contract has an out, and he previously was able to do his syndicated daytime talk show in addition to his CNN program.

First of all, I had no idea Gossip Girl was writing for Deadline now, but I’m very happy to see that she (he) landed on her (his) feet (it was Dan!), and second of all: Should we just hire Anderson Cooper to host everything from now on? He’s a good enough host! I think he can do it! It would sure beat all this hemming and hawing every time somebody got too old or too despised to host their current gig. PLZ vote in our poll and let’s just settle this thing:

Should Anderson Cooper just host everything?

  1. What about Meredith Viera? I hear she has an opening in her schedule.

  2. Why does everyone assume that whoever at Today is going to just go to Matt Lauer’s dressing room and be like “Oh hey we’re going to fire you and get someone about a million times more handsome and likeable to replace you. You’re cool with that, right?” and then he would actually be cool with that? Doesn’t pretty much everything we know about Matt Lauer indicate otherwise? And Anderson’s like “Wait I thought he was cool with me replacing him but now he’s not?”

WHO IS THINKING HE’S COOL WITH THAT? SOMEONE TELL THOSE PEOPLE THEY’RE STUPID.

  3. Oh, but also, probably D.L. Hughly should do it since he’s the last of the surviving Kings of Comedy without a hosting gig (he’s still alive, right?) and as a nation we just owe it to him.

  4. Gabe would do a good job hosting Jeopardy. Or Winwood. Then Kelly would move up to replace Ann Curry and Seacrest would tackle Videogum.

  5. I say we make a daytime show that just kind of absorbs all the awful hosts and puts them in once place. Quarantine the awful!

  6. Why would Lauer want to stay when everyone there wants him out? He could just switch jobs with Anderson. Easy peasy. You’re welcome.
