Ugh, i listened to a little bit before i had to stop, and not because i don’t want to cry today but because the song is terrible and the whole thing is Too Soon to make a joke (or a terrible song) out of, even though i kind of want to make one about how many tennis balls had to give up their lives to make that video.

I…don’t like this. That’s my knee jerk reaction, and I’m going to try and break it down.
Sandy Hook happened one month ago, and it takes real time to make music videos, no matter how terrible, right? Like did Will.i.am hear about this shooting and then immediately go recruit this baby to rap about it in this classroom? I hate that very much.
Here’s another part of it. Almost every single person who heard this story had some kind of personal, emotional reaction to it. I’m guessing a handful of people without any personal connection to the event decided their voices were important and unique enough to impose on large segments of the population. But Baby Kaely’s song is the Sandy Hook equivalent of a non-New Yorker crying about 9/11 on 10/11/01, not in the comfort of his bedroom, but on his youTube (myspace??) page to get some hits.
If this girl were older (like double, probably triple her age) I would hold her accountable, but she is 6 or 7 years old so I’m going to go ahead and say this is not on her. I imagine, though, that a lot of adults were involved in the making of this video, and I think they have some reason to be ashamed.
I only watched the first minute or so of this video, and I think it’s entirely possible, even likely, that the last minute offers some redemption in the form of like, “buy this on iTunes and we will donate all proceeds to dismantling the NRA.” I don’t think that changes the fact that the existence of this video is a little bit icky.

I do not need Will.I.Am to manipulate my still very raw emotions about Sandy Hook, just as I never need Will.I.Am to manipulate my emotions about anything, ever. Maybe that’s what bothers me so much about this – sentimentality is already established with this tragedy. The call to action does not need any more sentimentality. If anything, the call to action is better off remaining calm and reasoned, since I’m pretty sure most sane people in the world, right in the wake of this tragedy, were like “MAN, FUCK GUNS.” And even the insane people who were like “Don’t take away my guns!!!” were still sad and very, very upset and potentially more receptive to a message that isn’t insipid and gross like this.

I completely agree. Did the families of the victims ask for this? How is it Will.I.Am’s place to say anything about the Newtown shootings?

The way she looks, how she’s singing, and the source material makes this really insincere.
