I watched a video this morning about the window washers of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the world’s tallest building, and please do not click on that link because, if you can imagine, it is an INCREDIBLY terrifying job! To have to watch a video of! (The clip is from a show on the BBC during which the host also had to get a harness on and clean the highest windows on the world’s tallest building, which is another incredibly terrifying job because he had to talk to a camera at the same time.) (Also the cameraman’s job is terrifying because what if the host falls and you film it?!?) I’m not sure what you do as a job, but I sincerely hope that you are not a window washer for the world’s tallest building. I hope that because I care about you and I care about your families and I care about how much anxiety I have to hold with me on a daily basis about the people I know and the things that they’re doing (walking around outside, taking the train, driving cars) and I don’t want to have to add to my list. Assuming that you are not a window washer at Burj Khalifa, I think it’s appropriate to take some time out and watch this video the employees of Major Wire produced for a song they wrote “to show Major Wire’s dedication to their customers.” Today we are them, so happy about our jobs, or our unemployment — just so happy that we are not window washers at the Burj Khalifa.

You’re the best, Major Wire, whatever you are. I love the song you wrote together somehow. Thank you for your dedication to your customers. Thank you for how you guys spoke different languages. Thank you for not giving us vertigo. (And thanks for the tip, Thierry!)

  1. No one in the brigade wanted to serve under Major Wire because he was too tightly wound.

  2. You’re the best, Major Wire, whatever you are.

They make a wide range of stainless steel, carbon steel alloy, and non-ferrous wire and wire products. Durrrrrrrrrr.

And I guess they sell a lot of it in France. Or maybe Québec?

  3. Come on Kelly, haven’t you ever needed to transport and sort a bunch of recently exploded rock? How else would you separate the #5 from the #1 crusher run?

  4. “Some of us are terrified at the thought of washing the windows on the Burj Khalifa, and some of us have pet names for it.” -GP

  5. 1:53: pixellations necessary to prevent nonconsensual depiction of minor wire.

  6. I was expecting “When you walk through the garden…” to come up.
