Daniel Day Lewis is notorious for remaining constantly in character when he is on a movie set, such is his dedication to his craft and to the project at hand. Sure! I’ve never been on a movie set with him before so I can’t vouch for this first hand, but it sounds about right. At the very least, it’s certainly something that people have been saying for a long time. But this new behind-the-scenes glimpse into the mystery of Daniel Day Lewis from the set of Lincoln makes ya go hmmmm. From ThePlaylist:

Sally Field recently spoke to Time in a profile on Day-Lewis, where she revealed that the actor would frequently send her “some ridiculous limerick” signed “Yours, A.”, because clearly that is what Lincoln would have done given the technology. Field, who plays First Lady Mary Todd in Spielberg’s Lincoln, said she would “text back as Mary”–because what else do you do when Daniel Day-Lewis sends you a text pretending to be a dead president?–”criticizing him for the waste of his time when he might have been pursuing something more productive.”

He sent his co-stars TEXT MESSAGES “as Abraham Lincoln”? Is that even a thing? And this is supposedly an example of his unbreakable determination not to break the spell of acting? Bah! How annoying would that be by the way? No, I think we can put aside this Daniel Day Lewis mythology, or at the very least, be much more suspicious when it comes up again. This is not to criticize him as an actor! He is the very best actor! And whatever he needs to do on or off set to get to those performances, I hope that he keeps doing it. But the rest of us don’t have to breathlessly gossip about how we heard that he is so deep inside his character that he even makes people at the catering truck call him Mr. Left Foot and at night before bed he scours the missed connections page on Craigslist to see if anyone responded to his “Any Other Mohicans Out There?” post. Guys, acting is just playing make believe!

  8. You know, one thing about Daniel Day Lewis is that I have no idea what his personality is like. With most other actors, I feel like you get a recognizable part of who they are as a person that comes along with the performance, but not him. Each time out I feel like he’s really created a character from the ground up and completely obscures the man playing the character.

  9. He should have been freeing slaves instead of texting!!!

  10. she should’ve texted back “look behind you!”
