The trailer for Away We Go, written by Dave Eggers and Vendela Vida, directed by Sam Mendes, and starring Maya Rudolph and John Krasinski as wandering parents-to-be on a journey of self-and-each-other-discovery:

I’ve got it: Revolutionary Road meets Little Miss Sunshine! It’s funny that you can tell by just the music that the moral of the movie is “Life is crazy and people are crazy and there’s no instruction manual for life but you just have to do the best you can and home is where the heart is.” That should be a refrigerator magnet. Anyway, yeah, I’ll see this on a Sunday afternoon, with girls. Sure. Maya Rudolph is in it!

Uhm…did you not see Along Came Polly? The only thing that was good about that movie (and by good I mean the fucking BEST) was Hoffman’s character. It’s like Jack Black done right. So god damned funny.

      White Chocolate!!

  2. i didnt watch the whole trailor because yeah we get it…but he looks better with a beard.

  3. I’ll give anything Dave Eggers does a chance.

seconded. haters need to give that dude a break. as easy as it is to make fun of the trailer, and soundtrack aside, this movie seems to have alot going for it.

  4. I blame Wes Anderson for this genre. Thankfully (hopefully?), he seems to be moving on by doing an animated movie about George Clooney as a clay fox.

If Nick Drake’s estate and Bert Jansch stopped licensing their songs, I have a feeling these movies would go away.

  5. Yaaayyy!!! Garden State sequel!!! I hope the soundtrack has more The Postal Service.

  6. i’ll watch anything with allison janney in it

    No!

This looks like The Last Kiss, except actually good.

    don’t forget the Bandit.

  10. major points for casting jim gaffigan, allison janey and catherine o’hara. however, i’m not buying rudolph and krasinski as a couple. this is the type of movie that god invented netflix for…

  11. This didn’t get tagged under “It’s life, jump into life”?!

  12. enough with all the mopey banality. it’s like all these directors are having a bland-off. ‘ i can make everything more beige and dull than you can.’ i’m just waiting for the wayans bros to make ‘dreary indie movie I-IV’.

  13. With this cast, it could be a great comedy. But it won’t.

  14. Catherine O’Hara, can I just send you some cash so that I don’t have to see this movie?
I’ll see it anyways, there is enough potential in it.
I don’t like Krazinski facial hair

quirky white people and their quirky white friends being quirkily philosophical about quirky life and quirky love

  17. I hate myself for already liking this movie.

  18. This is how I know I’m not a hipster: that trailer did not interest me.

  19. NJOY  |   Posted on Mar 17th, 2009

Fuck that Rudolph chick ALISON JENNING is in it!!

  20. Lindsay, aren’t you the person who’s always like, “This last week’s SNL sucked, nothing was funny”? But now you’re all, “Yay, Maya Rudolph!”

Your sense of humor is backwards.

  21. jnuh  |   Posted on Mar 17th, 2009

It’s actually Alexi Murdoch performing that song.

  22. well sam mendes DID direct revolutionary road, so there’s that. and i’m all for this because john kraskinski looks less like michael phelps here (must be the facial hair) – and maya rudolph is just awesome.

  23. blah blah blah garden state blah blah blah squid and the whale blah blah blah wes anderson blah blah blah me and you and everyone we know blah blah blah sunshine

but I’m probably gonna see it anyway, so I can have an opinion

  24. You (this trailer) had me at Jim Gaffigan.

  25. I am obsessed with John Krasinski enough to give him $8.50 of my money, Recession shmecession!

  26. kind of a bummer that the movie Dave Eggers ended up making is the movie we all expected him to make

  27. Yes, but who is MOST jaded?

  28. even with the beard, Jim is still Jim.

  29. So it’s Juno for adults?

People are making too strong of opinions from this trailer. This movie seems to have all the right ingredients: Dave Eggers, Sam Mendes, Jim Gaffigan, Catherine O’Hara, Alison Janey, Maya Rudolf, etc. Don’t let the studio executives and marketers who shipped off this trailer make you think you can give a prescient judgement.

  31. John Krasinski bothers me, but I’m willing to put up with him for an hour and a half if Maya Rudolph and Jim Gaffigan are going to be there too.

  32. blah  |   Posted on Mar 18th, 2009

I was really hoping this movie would have had Alan Arkin, finger pointed upward, exclaiming into the camera, “aaaand away we go!!”

I’m holding out for the red band trailer. Fingers crossed!

Making the jump from the poor man’s Douglas Coupland to the poor man’s Noah Baumbach is an exceptional feat. Congratulations, Dave Eggers.

  34. Am I the only person who thinks a 20 minute bit on Hot Pockets does not a comedy god make?
    This movie = autumn of 2010, Saturday, 3:00p.m., HBO2.

  35. I love it when my wife staples lists to my jackets. I will so go see this movie.

  36. Maybe I’m the only one here, but it looks like something I’d enjoy..but then I also liked blah blah garden state blah blah squid and the whale blah blah little miss sunshine blah blah juno and love blah blah wes anderson…. So, I guess I’m not in the uber-hipsters-who-hate-hipsters club, that thinks everything is terrible if a film is accompanied by good music and animated title frames.

Yeah, it’s got that “indie” look and seems to play on the existential “who are we and how did we get here” theme, but it’s just a genre people! Every romantic-comedy looks exactly like the other, etc. I don’t know why people get so high-horsey-hater about the indie stuff.

  37. Sam Mendes=the biggest hack on earth right now in any profession.

  38. Not a big Mendes fan, but Dave Eggers is god! Why couldn’t they make You Shall Know Our Velocity into a movie? Best book ever.

  39. Aw man! Every time you guys rail on these sort of films my heart hurts!
Go back to high school, you jerks!

  40. FYI- It does sound like Nick Drake, but it’s actually a song called “All My Days” by Alexi Murdoch.
