Hey, here’s a quick question — What kind of stamps are you using these days, when you mail out your letters or rent checks or really whatever you’re mailing out, it’s none of my business? Normal? Normal stamps? Oh. I mean — no, no that’s fine. You can for sure use whatever stamp you want, I was just under the impression that you didn’t hate both The Simpsons AND the US Postal Service. That’s totally fine if you do! It’s weird, but whatever floats your boat full of hatred and greed, really. It’s just that I didn’t know. Anyway, so, now you’ve cost the Postal Service $1.2 million. From The Washington Post:

Someone at the U.S. Postal Service guessed that commemorative stamps featuring TV cartoon character Homer Simpson would be twice as popular as those of Elvis Presley.

In a move that wasted $1.2 million in printing costs, the Postal Service produced 1 billion of “The Simpsons” stamps. It sold 318 million.

A Postal Service inspector general’s report singled out the overproduction of stamps marking the 20th anniversary of the cartoon as an example of failing to align stamp production with demand.

Or maybe it’s an example of failing to align stamp production with SIMPSONS TRUE FANS RATHER THAN SIMPSONS FANS WHO BASICALLY DON’T EVEN CARE AT ALL AND PROBABLY DON’T EVEN LIKE THEM THAT MUCH, NO MATTER WHAT THEY TELL THEIR FRIENDS WHEN THE SIMPSONS COMES UP IN CONVERSATION AND I BET THEY PRETEND LIKE THEY’VE WATCHED IT THEIR WHOLE LIFE WHEN PROBABLY THEY’VE ONLY SEEN A FEW RERUNS AND DEFINITELY A BUNCH OF NEW EPISODES. Bunch of jerks. Just RUINING the US Postal Service.

  1. Maybe they didn’t buy them because they just counterfeited them from the above picture by photoshopping out that tiny black dash.

  2. It seems the US Postal Service didn’t learn anything from the Poochie episode.

  3. “Someone at the U.S. Postal Service guessed that commemorative stamps featuring TV cartoon character Homer Simpson would be twice as popular as those of Elvis Presley,” is definitely a valid scientific basis for spending all that money on the stamps.

  4. Talkin’ ’bout stamps: Why does anyone buy anything other than the Forever stamps? It doesn’t make any sense to me to do anything else? Those stamps are good FOREVER people. And they cost whatever stamps happen to cost at the time, but then you can use them later when stamps cost more? That’s such a good deal! Unless you are sending something to a child and want to get cartoon stamps for their amusement it makes no sense.

    • Seriously. By the end of my roll of Simpsons stamps, I had to use two per letter because postage went up, and I wasn’t going to walk to the post office for a measly one cent stamp. Also, it felt a little juvenile for a guy my age to send particular pieces of mail with cartoon characters on them.

  5. People use the post office? Huh.

  6. The post office is SOCIALIST*!

    *it’s true!

  7. What a bunch of fail-atelists.

  8. I bought a shit ton of stamps when Canada Post had the Canadian Legends series featuring the perfect Stompin’ Tom Connors. Those are the stamps I will use until the end of time, first of all because they’re awesome and second of all because I don’t send that many letters so that’s how long they’ll last me (plus those 1 and 5 cent stamps for when the price goes up).

  9. Here’s how I use stamps:

    1. I have to mail something that fits in a First Class Envelope. This is an extremely rare even in my life.

    2. I fill out the address and such on the envelope, and I put the check or whatever in it and seal it.

    3. I go to the post office, take it up to the counter, and buy the one stamp I need in order to mail it.

  10. Kelly, Kelly, are you admitting you’re too young to have seen the best years of the Simpsons, or just that you refused to watch it? Is cartoon-watching and quoting a predominantly male hobby in the US? I often get told by my lady friends that cartoons are a “boy” thing. Just curious.

  11. “Save the postal service! We’re in trouble! Mail more letters! We’re trying here!”

“Someone needs to fix this amazing shortage of Simpson’s stamps.”

    “SPEND ALL THE MONEY”

  12. I honestly don’t remember the last time I mailed something. What are you people sending via snail mail?

  13. I buy stamps all the time because I like the Post Office. I also bought a ton of Simpsons stamps (well multiple sheets of them). I am also a pretty big Simpsons fan.

So me. Some of this was me.

  14. I don’t think they sold as well as the Elvis stamps because they didn’t poll the public and have a vote on which version of Homer to include. I’m sure the world would have agree on fat Homer.
