Even in the year 2012, women continue on average to make substantially less than men in the workplace for doing the same jobs, and unsurprisingly this is a global phenomenon. So, a group in Belgium decided to combat this by creating Equal Pay Day to “close the wage gap.” Sure! Good! In order to get the word out, they created a PSA. Makes sense. But also it is in English, it is NSFW, and it is a heavily stylized, kind of arty short film in which Sasha Grey talks about her life in pornography. Uhhhh. No, I mean, I don’t know! It ends with a tagline that reads “porn is about the only way for women to make more than men,” which is just vague and qualified enough to be basically “FACT” without opening up any counter-arguments, and if that’s a “true” that is a depressing statistic, although it’s not a statistic so much as a tonal illustration. Then again, I’m not entirely sure who this PSA is geared towards. English speaking Belgians with libertine attitudes towards sexuality and a detailed knowledge of American porn stars who want to make the world a better place and have the means to do so without giving up their appreciation for aesthetically beautiful imagery? Nailed it. Those guys are in tha bag.

  1. Umm, have the people who made this never heard of “Gay 4 Pay?” Gay dudes make WAY more money porn than the women!

  2. good lesson: taking it in the ass, in one form or another, is the only way to one day get ahead. So clench your teeth, because accepting that very hard fact, nay, embracing it with vigor is the only way to success and equality.

  3. Women are better than men at unemotionally saying “I’ve had a 12 inch dildo stuck up my ass”, or at least this one woman is

  4. “Many is the day wake up in my Rococo-style sex dungeon and wander around my mansion to the soundtrack of The Opening of Misty Beethoven, wondering if there was a way I could learn more about economic gender equality.” – Kris Van Den Broeck, an English speaking Belgian with a libertine attitude towards sexuality and a detailed knowledge of American porn stars who wants to make the world a better place and have the means to do so without giving up their appreciation for aesthetically beautiful imagery.

  5. Put your Belgium here and here.

  6. Oh good, another excuse for my favorite gif!

  7. educated, articulate, and principled porn stars?

this is why we must hack into TV actresses phones in order to educate ourselves in which is the proper place to put our cum.

Miss Grey, please stop caring about such trivial matters such as gender equality. We need you to do your job and direct me on where to place this impending ejaculate. The current set of potential destinations [which currently include "my hand" and 'the floor"] simply will not do.

I really don’t want to be forced to break the law in order to get suggestions of Alison Brie or what’s-her-face on “Smash”. I will not stand for it.

  8. That is a funny looking casting couch.

  9. “Why did she leave nursing if she was making more than the doctors?!” – guy over whose head the ad went

  10. What is this? Equal pay for women? The next thing you know, they’ll be asking to make health care decisions!

(The Texas Medicaid thing was kind of a last straw for me this week.)

  11. If men in porn make less than women, then why do they call it the “money shot”?

  12. I see some value in this.

Statistically, there are some very disconcerting studies about the effects of pornography on consumer’s opinions about expansion of women’s rights (http://jfi.sagepub.com/content/9/4/518) So for people who follow Sasha Grey, this is not necessarily preaching to the choir.

This opens up the question of whether or not Miss Grey is being a bit hypocritical, but she does seem like a genuinely intelligent woman who wants to use her celebrity to affect change* and, like the whole #Kony2012 thing, I’m not eager to derail people’s efforts to make a difference, whether or not they’re a little misguided in doing so.

*One might ask how I know so much about Sasha Grey and, uh, well, those people certainly have bigger things to worry about.

    • I figure any hypocrisy in this can be an interesting addition to the wage disparity conversation. By putting herself in a job that might be empowering for her and apparently pays quite well, she is inadvertently reinforcing “the acceptance of male dominance and female servitude.” I do not think it is true that the sex trade is the ONLY place women out-earn men, but it’s definitely one of the few industries where women can make bank while their male counterparts flounder. And it’s more evidence that women as a whole stand to out-earn men only when they are young, single and childless.

      Bummergum.

      • Maybe not just ‘the sex trade,’ but other than porn and modeling, I can’t think of another area where women consistently outearn men. Oh, and look at that: both of those professions rely almost entirely on the employee’s physical appearance.
