Jessica Alba has finally broken her legendary silence via her MySpace blog, and she wants to clear some things up, you guys:

I want to clear some things up that have been bothering me lately. I find it depressing that in the midst of perhaps the most salient time in our country’s history, individuals are taking it upon themselves to encourage negativity and stupidity. Last week, Mr. Bill O’Reilly and some really classy sites (i.e.TMZ) insinuated I was dumb by claiming Sweden was a neutral country. I appreciate the fact that he is a news anchor and that gossip sites are inundated with intelligent reporting, but seriously people…it’s so sad to me that you think the only neutral country during WWII was Switzerland. Check out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweden_during_World_War_II if you want to see what I was referring to. I appreciate the name calling and the accurate reporting. Keep it up!!

Something tells me she does NOT appreciate the name calling and that she finds the reporting to be INaccurate! Because she’s not only a professional actress, she’s also a professional SARCASTRESS! (It’s going to be like this all day, I can just feel it.) The whole thing stems from a red carpet interview she gave during Barack Obama’s inauguration.

From US Weekly:

When a reporter approached her at an inauguration event last week, she tried to turn the tables on him by asking him what Barack Obama’s greatest characteristic was. When the reporter said he felt uncomfortable answering because he is a journalist, Alba replied, “be neutral – be Sweden about it.”

TMZ.com later called her a “ditz” and an “arrogant buffoon” for saying Sweden instead of Switzerland when referring to the neutral country during WWII.

O’Reilly – whom Alba had called an “a-hole” at the same event – also called her “misguided” for mixing up the countries.

“Be Sweden about it”? That’s not a thing, is it? Like, I’m going to be as generous as it is in my capacity to be and PRETEND THAT JESSICA ALBA EVEN WROTE THAT MYSPACE BLOG, which let us be real with each other and have our eyes open to the world around us she did not. But you just don’t say “Be Sweden about it” no matter how neutral they were in the whole War That No One Needed To Be Neutral About Because Jesus Christ. The whole purpose behind expressions and references is that people understand what you are talking about, Jessica Alba. Looks like we both learned something today.

“the most salient time in our country’s history”

    haahahahah what? thesaurus FAIL

  2. Myspace: The ultimate battleground for mature, intellectual debate.

  3. pretending to be smart to attempt to break out of the “only in brainless movies because you’re hot” fail

  4. Do you think Alba spent the last week writing that “Sweden during WW2″ wikipedia entry? BECAUSE ANYONE CAN WRITE ON THE WIKIPEDIA! That’s not actually true, as my brother discovered when he was shot down trying to create an entry for “Swamp Ass.”

Is “Be Sweden about it” the new “be adequite” (words of wisdom from Lindsay Lohan circa 2006)?

  6. I love how we seem to be completely unwilling to believe that Jessica Alba might know a fact about World War II.

  7. i like how tmz replied:

Jessica Alba is fuming at TMZ for calling her dumb when she called Sweden a “neutral” country last week … even though it currently has troops in Afghanistan.
She is absolutely correct. Sweden was a neutral country … 60 years ago.
Even though she was engaged in a debate about the current political situation in America when she advised a reporter to “Be Sweden … be neutral” — Alba is swinging back at critics, like TMZ, on her blog saying, “It’s so sad to me that you think the only neutral country during WWII was Switzerland.”
She is absolutely correct — when the Nazis were waging war on anyone who opposed Hitler’s evil rule, Sweden remained neutral and stayed out of the war. After the war, Winston Churchill referred to Sweden as “that small, coward country.”
We apologize for not considering the political climate of the world in 1942 when we suggested she may have meant, “Be Switzerland” — a country that is currently neutral.
    Our sincerest apologies.

hahahahaha – sorry that was so long

I seriously hope this sparks a prolonged debate about World War II history between Jessica Alba and TMZ, making world history into a minor fad among celeb-watchers. It may reinvigorate a love of history among the younger generation of this country, or move Joel McHale to affix a Hitler mustache on Spaghetti Cat. Either way, I’m good.

  8. i Think she meant switzerland right?

I like how, on the Wikipedia article for Sweden’s neutrality, the neutrality of the article is disputed.

  10. I hope she confuses Austria and Australian next.

  11. @nicole: Sweden was and STILL IS neutral. I am Swedish. Swedish troops did not take part in the invasion of Afganistan. They are currently there as PEACEKEEPERS. Something many neutral nations do. Sweden is neutral in that it is not commited to going to war to defend any nation, and no nation is commited to defending Sweden.

So yes, there are many other nations besides Switzerland that are neutral. Austria, Finland and Ireland are all neutral.

IN FACT Sweden has been neutral LONGER than Switzerland. Switzerland has been neutral since 1815, and Sweden since 1814.

I wonder if TMZ realizes also, that Switzerland has troops in Kosovo as peace keepers, much like Sweden has troops in Afganistan..
