Here’s a trailer for a new movie called Demoted starring David Cross, Sean Astin, and Michael Vartan and it looks meh!

This movie just looks like it’s relying a little too much on everyone’s generous good will towards Arrested Development, Office Space, Lord of the Rings, and The Office and not relying enough on actually being funny. Besides, doesn’t this kind of look like that movie The Promotion that just came out? Not that anyone would know because the box office for The Promotion was negative one thousand dollars, but still. If only the entertainment scientists could get their retread combinations right. Evil Tobias Funke taking over Dunder Mifflin feels like well-maybe-even-over-worn territory. Now you put Bilbo Baggins on a quest to make Regional Manager of the Shire’s second largest Weed manufacturer and you’re talking all the awards.

Tangentially related: I thought The Promotion was really clever and probably one of the best movies I saw all year. Along with Fireproof, of course.

  2. I like how they shoved all that hip indie music in there with absolutely no concern as to whether it had anything to do with what was going on in the scene or not.

A long, long time ago I was a script reader and had the misfortune to cover this one. It was awful in a strangely compelling sort of way. It was clearly written by someone who had never actually worked in any sort of office and who’s only experience with offices was watching 9 to 5 reruns on TBS. If your sensibilities are shocked by a woman becoming an executive (?whaaaa?!?) or a man having to get coffee, this will be the movie for you. At one point the men team up with the other female secretaries to pull pranks against their chauvinist bosses after they threaten to get rid of the women’s restrooms. Because that is what people would do. Not file a lawsuit, not report them to the labor board. No, shit on their cars. That works just fine. I’m almost giving this movie too much credit, implying that it is so out of date that they might be parodying the office movies of old, maybe a satirical Mad Men. I assure you, there is only one level to this movie, and it is guys shitting on cars. But who knows, maybe David Cross can add something that script lacked. Like he did with Alvin and the Chipmunks.

  4. Sean Astin and Vampire Weekend… no thanks.

  5. I’m still going to see it because of my unflinching loyalty towards David Cross. Plus, Vampire Weekend and Spoon (even if it didn’t make sense). I’ll at least give it a chance.

I thought the trailer was funny. I’ll be seeing this for Michael Vartan!!

  7. Are you sure that wasn’t the actual movie? It was way too long and explained too much. I think it was the whole movie.

I’d see it for Michael Vartan if it didn’t look so terrible.

  8. Wow, that looks horrid. The lack of appealing characters coupled with the disturbingly rapid switches between indie rock buzz songs tells me that this is just no good. They’re even songs that I like! It just makes me mad!

Also, if Dr. Steve Brule, aka John C Reilly, can’t drag me to the theater to watch the Promotion, no way is Rudy going to convince me to see this. Or that cute guy.

I’m seeing this only because of Michael Vartan. ANd I know a lot more who’ll do the same.. I think they had to put a cute guy there to sell. Well, at least they made the right move there..

michael vartan is so HOTTTTTTT. also david cross is amazing so i’m sure he wouldnt sign on to do any movie that he didnt think would make his audience laugh.

  11. I saw a screening of the movie in Sun Valley a few weeks ago and I have to tell you, it was a lot funnier than the trailer. I think they are still working on it, but it still made us howl from start to finish.  Cross and Sam from LOTR are hilarious.  I was surprised how funny it was.

You know, I think this actually looks quite cute. I don’t know about the writing, but it’s all actors I really like and they seem to be having great fun with it. Plus I don’t think I’ve seen Michael Vartan in a comedy; it’s fun to see him being something besides the model boyfriend or sainted spy. I’m normally a bit of a film snob, but given the chance, I think I’d actually see this! :-)
