How are these StoryCorps videos not a TV show? This should be a TV show! At this point, reality TV programming is such a calcified thing with its own rules and structures (and copious amounts of free alcohol) that nudge the dramatic arcs forward while stripping the shows of any genuine humanity. I guess this is more like The Ricky Gervais Show than any reality TV, but that’s really only because of the animation (which is stylistically similar, although these videos are definitely prettier), but The Ricky Gervais Show is great and there is absolutely room for a dramatic, heartfelt variation. Man, I am telling you, you just put me in that big seat in the Showbiz Head Office in the sky and everything’s going to change around here. WE’RE TAKING STORYCORPS PRIMETIME.

  1. “This thing will be called Story Corpse when I am through with NPR!! Muhahahaha” – John Boehner, probably.

  2. StoryCorps is a great idea and I’m glad someone is doing it.

    • I agree! A woman working for StoryCorps came to one of my classes and talked to us. Those people are just on the road, recording peoples’ stories from town to town. It’s a very small operation that I think is really special.

      • It’s the kind of thing that should always just be, ya know? Recorded history shouldn’t just consist of government documents and traditional media.

    • Totally. I’ve been listening to their podcasts for over a year now. I can always take 5-10 minutes out of my day to hear someone’s story.

Crazy thing about the most recent podcast, Episode 216: “The Kissing Case.” My grandfather was the civil rights attorney who took the boys’ case. The NC judge and jury were so racist at the retrial (the first trial happened before any lawyer ever even saw the boys) that they found the boys guilty of ‘attempted rape’ again (a white girl had kissed one of the boys on the cheek), and my grandfather had to call Eleanor Roosevelt to finally get the boys freed. By then tho, the damage had been done. They lost their childhoods.

      It’s a heart-breaking case.

  3. More like SNORYCORPS!

P.S. I didn’t actually watch this, or the first one. But sometimes you stumble across a joke so brilliant and original that it MUST be made.

  4. Why does my office get so dusty when I watch these things?

  5. That was really sweet.

When I’m older, I want to complain ALOT!

    also, curse at children.

  6. Lately, I find a lot of videos that have been posted make me laugh, of course, but then out of nowhere, I am crying. I am worried about me, you guys.

  7. I was like “This is nice and funny and charming.” Then came the last 10 seconds and my eyes were all burny, definitely because of some external element not related to the story.

  8. This is totally off topic, and I’m sure that I’m totally intercetping Gabe’s plans for a “Heaven Just Got A Little More Gilly” post, but DUDES! NO MORE GILLY!

  9. You guys I am super duper close to both of my maternal grandparents. In the past 2 weeks I have had 2 separate dreams where each one of them died in my arms and there was nothing I could do.

So I’m saying these posts should come with a NSFW warning.

    *tears*

    • I have one grandparent left and she just went into the hospital, the same day I flew halfway across the country for work. I needed a NSF being alone in a hotel room for work.

  10. So sad. Anyone lucky enough to still have their grandparents around should do something like this. When you’re young you really take for granted that they won’t be around forver. There are so many things I wish I could have asked and stories I’ll never hear.
