The news today that President Hosni Mubarak has relinquished his hold over the Egyptian government and fled the country is a tremendous victory for the Egyptian people, an important development in the history of democracy, and an interesting new addition to the complicated and ever changing political landscape of the Middle East. But most importantly it means that the rest of us can finally ENJOY THE WEEKEND. Ugh, remember last weekend how none of us got any sleep or did anything fun or relaxed from the INCREDIBLE stress of our daily lives, because we were all just so worried about what was going on in Egypt? Thank God that’s all over and Egypt’s fine now and there’s absolutely nothing that still needs a tremendous amount of work and restructuring and peacekeeping and diplomacy and humanitarian oversight in Egypt. Back to normal! And you know what that means: BRUNCH! Enjoy it. We earned it. The true heroes.

So are we to infer at the end of this movie that Sarah Polley is going to have a Splice Splice Baby?

Oh, ugh. So sure, there is some sexism inherent in the system, I will concede that much. But it’s not going to go away by complaining about it. First of all, that just validates the belief that MEN (boo hiss) are the ones running things, and WOMEN (yay ovaries) are not in charge of the status quo, which just gives power to the thing you’re trying to be against. How about instead of complaining about women being treated poorly, or men being treated poorly, maybe we just complain when PEOPLE are treated poorly? The idea of “feminism” is a good one in theory, but it still puts the importance of one gender over another. There won’t be equality until people stop seeing things in terms of gender.
Posted in: Quote Of The Day: The Tina Fey Quote

[Ed. note: Whoa. I think that Facetaco actually makes some pretty important points about the ways in which fighting for equality can blur the actual issues, and how the more we focus on the divisive aspects of the problems the more divisive they become. That just seems true! And it's something to consider! But I certainly don't agree that "feminism" (why is it in quotes?) places the importance of one gender over another. It focuses on the plight of one gender in order to equalize that gender's position in the world, but that's different than placing a hierarchical value judgement on genders. I'm also pretty sure that not seeing things as being about gender is going to be tough to do when those things are definitely about gender? Like, I have some minor issues with the Tina Fey quote that kicked off that debate, but what she is talking about is the fundamental gender-based inequality in the entertainment industry, which is real, and which can't simply be dismissed as the individual problems of good or bad people. Anyway...congratulations on getting a top 5 comment and a lowest rated comment in the same week, Facetaco. Do you have your EGOT yet?]

Did you guys hear about this? This was in the news. Did you hear about this? Apparently Jay Leno won the hasty pudding award. Did you hear about this? Yeah. Apparently he tried to put the pudding into one of his cars!

Kevin Eubanks: Ahhahahahaha. His cars. Man. That’s great.

This Week’s Editor’s Choice

[Ed. note: As previously mentioned, the Splice Photoshop thread was my favorite thing this week, so the Editor's Choice actually goes to the entire thread, but many of the entries in that thread have already been recognized--and a few still deserve recognition, so go here and recognize--but this one is really good. They're all really good. Good.]

  1. For your Valentine’s Day-

  2. The weekend is here, Egypt is free, and love is in the air. Fuck yeah! Now…

  3. Friday. dance gifs:

  4. I concur great work on the Splice manips, it was very sad being without photoshop and only being allowed to laugh and upvote

  5. Nightmare, do you still have the Brunch! picture? I think it would be appropriate.

  6. Wow, I wonder if anyone* can tell us if this is the first time in history a single thread has swept the Top 5?

    *Anyone = werttrew, obviously.

  7. Gabe, We’ll really miss you next week but I’m super excited about all the guest bloggers!
Nightmare: I’m still hoping for a portlandia post!
Wert: Will you allow gifs in the monster’s ball? I’ll just have to figure out a way of getting enough votes.

  8. I don’t see facetaco’s top 5 comment!

  9. Congratulations to everyone! Now that the whole Egypt thing is over we can shift our focus to a battle, a war that still rages on: TOILET DUMP OR MYSTERY BUTT? In the war to end all wars, we must all take sides.

  13. We’re still gonna do a live chat D&D game, right? Because, guys, Briadru4 needs one of these babies:

  14. New Party Game #whatever: Bieber Films.

“Life in the Time of Bieber Fever”

Goodnight Monsters! I’ll be here until Wednesday.

  15. Haha, the best part is that I got 24 upvotes for saying I was going to “pick up chicks” at a viewing of the Justin Bieber biopic. You guys have some pretty strange voting priorities!

  16. Crap, I always forget that this thread is where the monsters pimp their shows. Anyone going to be in Houston tomorrow night? Come to Rudyards and see my band Fiskadoro as well as two other severely rad acts. IT IS A FREE SHOW!!!!!

Also, Splice, how about that. For the record I thought that lawblog’s human/Mexican food DNA comment was the bestiest. And I am painfully aware that nobody will read this.

  17. I don’t like to toot my own horn, but I would like to point out that I got 17 upvotes on a Stereogum post this week, which I’m pretty sure is a record for Stereogum. We’re not very funny over there.

    • You should absolutely be tooting that horn like Miles on Bitches Brew (the real # 1 drug album), cause that Verve comment was solid gold. And though I didn’t say anything in the post, I did upvote it multiple times from multiple computers.

  18. There’s nothing funny about indie-rock. Except for Art Brut.

    • I saw them four times in 2009. I had a few beers with Eddie Argos after his side project played Chicago last summer. That dude is hilarious, and a really nice guy. And he liked my Super Furry Animals t-shirt.
