I would like to grab the microphone and unleash a string of profanities and then activate the emergency slide, grab two beers, and JUMP OUT OF THIS WEEK! You guys know what I’m talking about? Sometimes it just gets to be too much. I quit! I quit the week of August 9-13! NOW WHERE IS MY PARADE? (Incidentally, I think it was terribly irresponsible of Steven Slater to abandon his work, right when the threat of TERROR BABIES was at its highest. That guy must hate America something awful.)
After the jump, the five Highest Rated Comments, as voted on by you, the Lowest Rated comment, the winner of this week’s Baby Conan/Cowell Nightmare Caption Contest, and the Editor’s Choice.

being white is gross?
Ew.
I love the guy who yells, “Yeaahh Art!” at the end. He gets it.
I like the guy who says to his friend “You hungry?”
I knew the exact point tha I should have stopped watching that, yet I kept going. t
I just realized how similar Simon’s nipples are to the karaoke personals guy. Man, it’s all shirtlessmengum this week.
STEVEN Slater probably DOES HATE America. But I will CONTINUE MY lone stance of THINKING Steven Slater IS DEFINITELY a giant fucking asshole, and IT UPSETS ME that our fucking country loves TOSSING SO much praise over such a PERSON.
You are not alone.
It will blow over in a week. Maybe he’ll get a book deal. Who cares?
i think he looks like joe the plumber. maybe he is joe the plumber!
I care BECAUSE SOME asshole who disrupted AN ENTIRE PLANE and airport will GET A BOOK DEAL and a million adoring FANS WHILE some lab researcher out THERE SPENDS 60 hours a week TRYING TO find some better way to treat CANCER AND gets jack shit.
Our culture IS ALL kinds of fucked UP IN TERMS of appraisal AND IT bugs me.
Also I dislike SLATER BECAUSE I THINK it continues to highlight a disturbing trend WITHIN OUR own culture. Much LIKE JOE THE PLUMBER, as super mentions below, HE IS THE kind of angry, folk hero with WHOM THE masses identify. That identification IS BASED on and reflects THE TENSE, violent, and ARGUMENTATIVE SOCIETY in which our MODERN CULTURAL conversation is TRAPPED.
The lab researcher does get a stable, well-paying and intellectually rewarding job, though. And moral superiority.
Am Pat! Long time! Where’ve you been!?
Anybody who has had to endure the service industry and put up with this ridiculous “the customer is always right even if they are a huge fucking asshole” ideal applaudes Steve Slater. It’s not because he disrupted a plane, it’s because he didn’t let some self-important asshole get away with treating service people like shit. Robots don’t bring you food and drinks, they are real human beings, capable of snapping or calling you out on your shit. I’m not president of his fan club or anything, but I get the folk hero status. It’s not that he’s better than a cancer researcher – that seems like a weird comparison, frankly…not sure who is saying he is better than somebody doing real work like that – but as somebody who has put in their fare share of putting up with the fucking atrocious behavior of the common man, Slater is ok in my book.
Ghostdad,
As someone who has been a member of the service industry for longer than I care to admit, your reasoning is exactly why he is a folk hero. I’m not saying he deserves fame and he certainly doesn’t deserve fortune for throwing a temper tantrum but I, and I’d argue anyone who has spent any amount of time in the service industry, can absolutely understand his actions.
Agree Ghostdad. But, AnAmPat… What the hell are you talking about? The reason he is a folk hero (to some people) is that he was somebody who was sick and tired of being ignored. Is Cancer research really that thankless?
“OH! No one cares about me! Boo hoo” – Ms. Cancer Researcher
“Chillax. Have you cured Cancer yet?”
“No?” – Ms. C.R.
“/ignore”
I agree that this is an unfortunate cultural phenomenon: Why does our society FEEL they need this kind of HERO, y’know? Why do they feel they need a Common man to stand up to Big Airplane Passenger or whatever? Instead of being upset that he IS a folkhero maybe examine WHY he’s a folkhero…and then turn that mirror on yourself. …no just kidding…. I mean, HOW and WHAT do we change to make people feel appreciated? Be nice to them? To other people? #crazytalk.
LOOK, IT’S not that he quit his job OR WHATEVER THAT I find apprehensible. Nor am I ARGUING THAT he shouldn’t have called OUT THAT obvious asshole’s SHIT. I have DEFINITELY dealt with MY FAIR SHARE of shitty jobs. However, HE KNEW when taking THAT JOB that he was GOING TO have to deal with SHITTY people. He knew IT WAS GOING TO get frustrating. He knew PEOPLE WERE going to be at their worst because LET’S FACE IT, it’s not like HE’S THE first fucking FLIGHT attendant in ALL OF time. If he DIDN’T LIKE his fucking job, HE SHOULD have just quit it like an ADULT. Thats what I’M SAYING. If he’s going to THROW A TANTRUM like a five year OLD because of CONDITIONS HE was well aware OF WHEN taking the job, then I DON’T see WHY THE fuck anyone should find HIM SO special.
Jobs suck. Lots OF JOBS SUCK. Lots of PARTS OF everyday life suck, BUT MOST OF us are fortunate to HAVE IT BETTER OFF than a vast MAJORITY of the world, and if we CAN’T bow out of something WE DISLIKE gracefully, then WE NEED TO at least act like A FUCKING adult. Otherwise I FAIL TO see what differentiates one asshole from ANOTHER.
But the folk hero thing stems from all the other service folk who can sympathize. Reading a blurb about Slater is a relatively innocuous way to live vicariously and put a little spring in your step if you deal with shitheads all day. Is what Slater did really so terrible? Did he go postal and shoot everyone on board? Did he stab the offending passenger with a shiv until they bled to death? No. That’s when the story would cross the line into tragedy territory. All he did was hurt himself in one big “take this job and shove” blaze of glory. It’s good for a laugh or two over the blurb in the Sunday paper, it’s good for putting a spring in the step of a waiter going in for another shitty night of getting screamed at by suburban families who hate each other and decide to take it out on him. I just don’t get the people de-crying it as the end of civilization. Cooks have always spat in food, movie ushers have always snuck in a “fuck you for coming” at the end of the night…this is just that on a larger, more media friendly scale.
NOT TO mention his LAWYER IS already talking up how affected HE WAS by the TWA Flight 800 crash AND 9/11 ATTACKS.
Ugh, if YOU’RE GOING to be an asshole, don’t have YOUR LAWERY insinuate it’s IN PART because of A REAL, ten year old TRAGEDY.
Honestly I have to agree. I have one of those thankless service industry jobs other people have mentioned, and I was still turned off by his actions. Admittedly, I haven’t worked this job anywhere near as long as the 20 years he did; I’ve been at it for about 6 months and have already had to squash the temptation to lash out at some particularly argumentative customers. Like AmPat said, though, you have to know when you take a job like that that a large part of it will involve smiling and being polite to people to treat you like shit. Is it fun? No. But it’s part of your job. I won’t deny that I curse out customers, but I do it with my coworkers when the customer is gone.
Basically what I’m saying is that no one expects you to be a saint and just take all of their bullshit, they just expect you to be professional. I vent my frustration in what I feel is a more appropriate manner. If I reached a point where I thought I wouldn’t be able to take it anymore, I think the mature, adult thing to do would be to remove myself before an incident like this occurred. Who’s going to want to hire him now knowing that he might snap and start cursing out a customer?
well, i had a big tirade but once i typed it i felt… better? SO long story short: I don’t think it is unreasonable to expect CUSTOMERS to show YOU the same respect THEY expect you to show them. You get what you give and if you reek of attitude and bile, well, we’ll see how far that gets you.
What’s his name isn’t a REAL hero. He’s just a fed up asshole. Who know where he goes from there and frankly I do not care and will not keep tabs on this story beyond the anecdote.
I don’t really want to turn this into a big Huffington Post debate, but I’ll just go so far as to say that there are other ways to get back at disrespectful customers that don’t involve sinking to their level. I don’t know that this necessarily applies to a flight attendant job, but I know that in my experience as a customer service rep, I’ve always been willing to go the extra distance to resolve an issue for a customer who’s polite and patient. If someone throws a fit and starts cursing me out, I am not in any way inclined to make policy exceptions for them or do anything beyond the minimum required work. They’re going to get a restatement of the policy and a polite but firm “We’re done here, please leave.”
While I feel like both sides here are correct (it is gratifying to those who have worked in the service industry to see a worker blow up at a customer because we have all wanted to do it ourselves; but also, it isn’t the sort of thing that should make him the next John Henry), I think the real reason that Mr. Slater has gained this much attention is because of the silly way that he did it–the inflatable slide, the beers, etc.
I think this speaks less to the inner-repressed-worked struggling against the yolk of our toil and more to our modern hyper-ironic sense of humor. If Mr. Slater had just told off the passenger and that been that, or even quit with dignity, we would not know who he is (because this happens every day). No, we are responding to this story with the same part of our selves that responds to Jersey Shore and poorly thought out tattoos.
I agree, you know this.
Typing in capital letters is the grammatical equivalent of yelling with your mouth full.
A huge week for That One. I didn’t see the Incredimark gif until just now — swell work. A very pleasing week, monsters. Huzzah.
Good job everyone! Here is another prince gif for the weekend!

By the by, this Scott pilgrim vs my cock bullshit is rape raping my mobile browser.
Too soon?
This made me so happy…and then so sad when I remembered that those fuckers at NBC decided they’re delaying the premiere of season 3 so they can use it as a mid-season replacement.
To which I say UP YOURS, I WANT MORE RON FUCKING SWANSON.
GUESS WHO HAD A PUPPY AT THEIR WORK TODAY
LUCKY! All I had was my boss’ 12 year old son. However, the kid was pretty cool. We talked about Arcade Fire, and he had a Smiths button on his backpack. So I gave him some Vampire Weekend stickers and posters we had in the office. I hope my future kids are as cool as him, but with my luck they will think T Mills is where its at.
MONSTER MEET-UP TOMORROW Y’ALL!!!!!! Click here for details!
Stop on by for pizza and good times!
BRING YO FRIENDS!

I would have loved to have made the Ball for something more clever, but I’ll take it. Gabe, I understand that time is an issue when you have many very clever tv write-ups a week to write AND how Mad Men reviews are everywhere on the internets, BUT I’ll end this run on sentence with this thought: please return to Gabe-style recaps when True Blood ends and you have the time. Thanks.
Hey Monsters- Guess who has two thumbs and got fired today?
Any of you NYC monsters got any leads on some part time work?
I wish wish wish. Go you, Adgled. Did you take the slide with a beer in each hand?
No, I took the front door with my Office Max organizer in one hand, and a snotty, tear stained napkin in the other.
Did George Clooney fire you via text message?
Ugh, sorry bro.
On the bright side, you can now devote yourself to being a full-time monster.
I’m sorry to hear that. I was laid-off too, about a year and a half ago, so I know what it is like. However, I’m sure you will find something else, and probably like it better too. I don’t live in NYC, or have any jobs in NYC, so my good vibes are only of a limited benefit to you, yet I send them anyway.
Stay strong.
Incredimarc. That is just beautiful work.. 142 doesn’t do it justice.
Am I the only one who can’t see whatever it is that Incredimarc posted? Even if I go back to the original posting – nothing.
Insert sadface here.
Agreed. I think if it had been farther up, it could have given “what a weird kitchen” a run for its money. But then, clearly time is needed to craft such beautiful art. I am imagining Incredimarc’s face morphed onto RDJ’s body as he fashions the iron man uniform. Weekend photoshopperssssssssss?
So hey guys, I’ve been talking with some other monsters, and it seems we have quite a few creative types. Despite not actually having an Etsy shop myself, I have been tasked with commandeering my wife’s shop and starting a Videogum Monster Etsy Team. But we need people before we can make it! So if you have an Etsy store, or have a loved one who does, or have stolen the identity of someone who does, shoot me an email at JCarlisle729@gmail.com and give me the url, and I’ll add you to the team roster. And if you don’t have a shop but want to join anyway, you should learn to make something and start being more productive!
Do you know what I just learned? Nicole from Work of Art is Countess Luanne’s niece. But Nicole is so nice! And Luanne is so “Money Can’t Buy You Class!”
I’m with Gabe on the strong week. Good work from moderator to Monsters to (God help me) even Winwood who had some serviceable posts. Let’s all go get drunk.
[Ed. note: LOL. Sideways half-smile half-frown emoticon. Full-smile emoticon.]

Haha, Gabe Was all –
I could watch this gif for hours. Thank you friend.
