Sony Gonna Give You Up, Sony Gonna Let You Down

I know that RickRolling has basically been dead as a meme ever since your mom saw them do it on the local news and tried RickRolling you by sending an email that was purportedly a collection of funny photos of animals eating birthday cake but ended up just being the lyrics to “It Would Take A Strong Strong Man,” and then at the end she wrote, “am I doing this right? Call me if you get this so I know that you got it. Lots of Love. Mommy.” But now it is OFFICIALLY over. From Mashable:

Wanna Rickroll someone? No problem, there are thousands of copies of the video of Rick Astley’s legendary song, “Never Gonna Give You Up,” on the Internet. However, if you want to use the original Rickroll video, which should be located here, you’ll be greeted by an ugly message: This video has been removed due to terms of use violation.

Well played, Sony. I am sure that the multiple Rick Astley’s Greatest Hits albums that young people bought ironically was a real burden on you, and the sudden and unexpected increased awareness of an otherwise fading artist from your massive catalog was hard to take. “Sony has always respected our artists’ right to fade into obscurity and not become hugely successful pop-cultural events, and we will use every legal tool in our power to ensure they do.” Idiots.

UPDATE: it’s back! Great news! However, my comments about Sony, and old media in general, being idiots still stands.

  1. Well, its back to tubgirl and goatse for me.

  2. Suddenly he is concerned? Didn’t seem to be worried about it during the 2008 Macy’s parade.

    • I doubt it was Astley. If an artist actually complained about their work being on YouTube their record company would probably sue them for attempting to exercise too much control over the company’s property.

That said, they took the video down and then put it back up, making us all click on the link millions of times, begging the question: Did Sony just RickRoll us?

  3. My No-Fun-O-Meter is going crazy right now.

  4. bad news for me, good news for those on my enemy-list.

  5. Thanks for taking it to Sony. those guys have been bitter and mean ever since I stopped using my sony discman.

  6. I suppose now it’s clear to all of your why I’ve started BryanAdamsRolling

  7. At least the video for Together Forever is still available

  8. Maybe people could start using Jessie’s Girl so we don’t have to change the name?

  9. Post 2012 the archaeologists of the intertubes will be confounded by the mysterious youtube linked scattered far and wide that leads nowhere. Rickrolling will be the croatoa of our day.

  10. looks like we’re going to have to use his other great hit from now on:

“You just got Together-Forever’d.” Clunky, but it’ll do.

  11. I think Mashable and me have different definitions of the word “legendary.”

  12. I would’ve put up a gif of Rick Astley but this news is just so damn depressing that we need some cheering up…

  13. This time, the anger lasts long enough for Underpinnings to write it down. He scrolls down to the Leave a Reply field, a blank white sheet. He types in capital letters, stabbing at the keys with his delicate, trembling hands: MY TRIBUTE, appears behind the cursor in the top left corner. TO THAT RETARDED 80S SONG. But Underpinnings doesn’t press the Submit button. He presses a different button, a button that makes the words bigger. He presses the button again and again and again, the words growing bigger and bigger and bigger until they become too big to fit the screen, now they’re just letters, but he keeps hitting the button, bigger and bigger still, now just shapes and angles, just geometry filling the white screen with black like the three squares. Cultural Underpinnings Face King is shaking, his entire body is shaking, and he’s still hitting the button, bang, bang, bang, and he’s shouting now. He’s standing outside on the street corner and he’s arching his back and he’s shouting at the top of his lungs.

  14. It’s been ported over to YouTube’s music video hosting site Vevo, you guys, not taken cos of angry copyright grrness by music baddies!! S’all good!

  15. Hidden due to low comment rating. Click here to see

  16. Sony doesn’t own Keyboard Cat, right? I never want to see the words “R.I.P” and “Keyboard Cat” together.

  17. more recently than i like to to remember, my mother would call me to let me know that she emailed me. or call me if i didn’t email back right away. apparently with the internet, i’m not allowed to ignore religious forwards when they’re from my mom. thankfully she has a better handle of what the internet is these days. moms. it’s a good thing loving them is a genetic imperative.

  18. If only there were other video sites besides than YouTube…….

  19. Play rickroll off, Keyboard Cat…

  20. I Rick Rolled someone like, last week. I love bringing that shit back after people have forgotten about it haha.

  21. It was a mercy killing.

  22. I think we need a Rick Ashtley v. Ginger Kid mash up.

R.A: “We’re no strangers to love”
          G.K: “I HAVE A SOUL!”
R.A: “You know the rules and so do I”
          G.K: “FUCK YOU!”

(never gonna give you up Ginger Kid. *never*)

  23. Thank you, Gabe. The big labels, like Sony, trying to take off videos like Rick Astley’s due to terms of use violation is like trying to drain the atlantic ocean by scooping water out with a bucket. They can’t ever stop pirating, and for a lot of lesser known artists it just gives them significantly more exposure and fans. Sorry to get all seriousgum, but when the chatroulette to catch a predator video got removed the other day it was the last straw for me with this crap.

  24. I didn’t realise how much I loved rickrolling till now. I guess the old saying is true, you don’t know what you have until you have lost it.

  25. Next you’re going to tell me that my Beanie Babies and my Pog collection are worth nil. C’mon internet, are we cowabunga? Are we?

  26. gabe, you got the hypothetical situation from the first paragraph from scottgum’s mom. admit it.

  27. I think it’s high time for the ReverseRickRoll to catch on. For instance I might say something like,

“you guys don’t know anything about cutting wood until you’ve seen this:

And then you’d click and find yourself both more educated and slightly entertained.

  28. I prefer gayroll

My mom’s never going to ruin THIS for me.

This whole fiasco was basically just all of us getting rickrolled by Sony, wasn’t it?
    Well played…

  30. Damn terms of use violations. I wanted to see interupting Andrew just once in my life to no avail.
