The problem with mumblecore is that it tries so hard to seem “real” that it takes you out of the movie and makes you realize you’re sitting in a seat watching people trying very very hard to seem real. And then it seems even more contrived. It’s like, be a movie where each scene requires a lot of takes, or be The Hills, but don’t try to do in-between. I could be completely and totally wrong about In Search Of A Midnight Kiss, which opens next weekend in NY and LA, (and IFC films are usually good), but it just screams “annoying” to me. But then again, I loved Before Sunrise when it came out, so maybe I’m just old:
I walked out of it the first time when it was called Shortbus.

Saw it at the IFC Center last weekend…it’s a bit preciously contrived at times, but it’s sweet. Like comfort food. Then shame.
i am embracing the pain, bro. btw: before sunrise didn’t try to make the case for how hard it is to be young. it made the case that being young is fucking awesome. it’s the exact opposite of white-people-have-problems.
I’ve worked with that guy on some films. His name is Scoot. He’s also in some WAMU commercials, which is a great way to make your Grandma SUPER proud.
I saw it and liked it quite a bit, but I can see why someone would find it annoying. I agree with the comfort food title. There are some things in it that are worth it’s shortcomings though.
