[In this feature, we will periodically check in to see what is up with Topher Grace.]

This week, I finished a really good book that I highly recommend. It is called 2001: A Space Odyssey, and it was written by Arthur C. Clarke. My edition of the book included an interesting preface in which Clarke described writing the book. Basically, he and Stanley Kubrick had already decided to make a movie together, and they had hashed out some of the basic ideas for the plot. But then, Kubrick encouraged Clarke to write a novelization first, rather than sitting down and writing the screenplay. The thinking was that a screenplay is too workhorse-y and schematic, with very little room for imagination and experimentation. A novel, however, could be expansive and thoughtful and adventurous, and then they would retrofit it into a workable structure on which to base their movie. Of course, the book itself went on to become a best seller, so it was probably a pretty smart decision, $$$-wise. It seems like a lot of work, though, doesn’t it? I mean, it’s one thing to turn a book into a movie (or a movie into a book) after the fact, but to know that you want to make a movie from a certain idea, but first writing hundreds of pages of book before even starting to write the hundreds of pages of screenplay? That is dedication. You should read it, though. It’s really good!

You know what else is a lot of work? Making sure that the world never has any trouble finding out what is up with Topher Grace. That, too, is dedication! But just like 2001: A Space Odyssey, it is a labor of love.

So, what is up with him?

Robert Rodriguez’s reboot of the Predator franchise, Predators, starring Adrien Brody and Sir Topher Grace, Knight, as been making a LOT of websites’ Most Anticipated Movies of 2010 lists. Good news for our boy! But that movie is not coming out until July 7th. That is literally months away. Let’s focus on what is happening now, which is the upcoming romantic comedy, Valentine’s Day , for which there is a new featurette:

–Topher Grace

“Some intersect and some never touch.”
–Topher Grace

Wise words. Meanwhile, an article on the website AssociatedContent, which I guess is basically a group blog for anyone for whom Tumblr is too complicated, is titled “Whatever Happened to Topher Grace?” and it includes the following paragraph:

So today, while doing something else totally unrelated with the television on in the background, it suddenly occurred to me; whatever happened to Topher Grace? I mean, the rest of the cast of that show is fairly well accounted for; Ashton Kutcher married Demi Moore; Wilmer Valderrama got dumped by Lindsay Lohan for a girl; Mila Kunis is on Family Guy and all kinds of movies including the upcoming “Book of Eli;” Danny Masterson is doing….Hyde worthy projects; Laura Prepon dyed her hair blonde and has been doing television including “How I Met Your Mother,” and “October Road;” but what about Topher Grace? Whatever happened to Topher Grace?

I would kill, literally kill, like a man would be dead, to find out WHAT THE “TOTALLY UNRELATED” THING WAS THAT THIS PERSON WAS DOING WITH THE TELEVISION ON IN THE BACKGROUND. Ooooh, I love a good mystery!

Although, it is almost insulting how familiar this writer is with every single detail of what is up with all of the other cast members of That ’70s Show and so completely in the dark about Toger. (They were surprised to discover that Good Company came out six years ago? WAKE UP!) But that is precisely what this column is for. To inform people of what is up with Topher Grace, regardless of race, creed, or detailed understanding of former Grace castmates. We report, we do not judge. If the writer of that article is reading this, however, I highly encourage you to visit the archives!

And check out this fun video that a fan made. Things get really good toward the end:

Eat your fart out, Michelangelo! (The well known artist, not the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle.) Some people are truly gifted with creativity!

And speaking of gifts: That ’70s Show remains popular in syndication

There you go. That is what is up with Topher Grace. Send your Topher tips to See you next time!

  1. It’s good to see Topher (literally attempting and failing to) kick down some Hollywood doors. Thank you, that video, for showing us what it looks like to not take no for an answer. I bet that same attitude was on display when people told you to stop making an awkward fan video of you drawing Topher while listening to the Notwist.

  2. Well then, how about Videogum goes with an article entitled “Whatever happened to AssociatedContent?”, because any website willing to write off Topher Grace’s great artistic work over the past few years (Win A Date With Tad Hamilton! Spider-Man 3! Sorry if this is too highbrow for you, AssociatedContent!) is deserving of similar ridicule.

  3. Leave it to TophAce go give us two TWSSs in one featurette. The man’s a pro.

  4. I really wish that person doing the portrait of Topher had the foresight to rotate their camera 90 degrees clockwise so the video would be displayed UPRIGHT.
    Fucking amateur!

  5. Funny that the writer thought it enough to put ‘Danny Masterton is doing.. Hyde worthy things’, but managed to miss that our boy TraceGopher starred in a blockbuster movie and several other projects.

  6. It looks like the artist sketched this drawing while watching Topher get his hair cut at a Supercuts and managed to capture the exact moment when Topher came to the horrible realization that the hairstylist had misunderstood “just a trim” for “badass flat top”.

  7. “what! who is watching my video so many times?! how did this happen in one day?!”

  8. Wow way to take away T.Gra’s youth in that sketch and emphasize his need for Restylane. Wasn’t it just last week that he was struggling with his burgeoning adulthood in acclaimed, blockbuster movie Young Americans?

  9. Oh Topher….I love you for being in what seems to be “the mother of all romantic comedies”.

  10. I wish there were a movie featuring Topher for every holiday! Then I could feel like I was really spending them with those import to me.

  11. its a sweet life… u just gotta keep living, dawgs!!

(This post is officially approved by Topher Grace.)

  12. Can you guys believe that my spell-check doesn’t think Topher is a word?!

You crazy for this one, Toshiba.

  13. The artist definitely has a gift. I think we can all agree on that. My only complaint (It’s nitpicky. But, hey, so is Toger when it comes to acting) is that we don’t see enough of Toph’s tastefully bleached tips.

  14. “My god. It’s full of stars.”
    - Dave Bowman upon viewing the Valentine’s Day trailer.

  15. Thank you for giving us “some of that web action”! I needed it today.

  16. Gabriel, Topher’s breathtaking breakout hit co-starring Scarlett Johansson and Dennis Quaid was called IN Good Company, not “Good Company.” We’re still four or five steps ahead of that mystery blogger, but come on now!

  17. Topher has the making of a young Perry Cox near the beginning of the sketch! … Or maybe it was Mr. McGinley that had – I’ll stop now.

  18. I watched Mona Lisa Smile the other day. Topher Grace has a minor role. I also watched a movie called “Houseguest” that featured the riot-and-a-half comedy of Sinbad.

  19. hey pat yourselves on the back…when you google “topher grace” in images, “What’s Up With” is a tag to a photo on the bottom row linked to HERE…the PORTAL has OPENED

  20. I’ve totally got 100 mega nerd boners for the Predators movie, but I’ve already popped 10 of them over the guy’s time-lapse doodle of Topher G. And I’m a dude!

  21. 2010…the second coming of GRACE
